Govt employees to get Konkani training!

The Directorate of Official Language based at Junta House, here, is gearing up to train as many Government employees in the usage of Konkani language in an effort to implement the State Official Language Act for daily administrative purposes.
Director G D Padgaonkar informed that the Directorate has recently printed 2,000 copies of the Konkani manual which covers the basics of the language for training purpose. “We have to select teachers to train the employees who have no knowledge of Konkani,” he stated.
Padgaonkar said the number of teachers to be selected will depend upon the total number of employees to be trained for a period of one-month (actual 25 working days). These teachers will be paid an honorarium, he added.
He informed they had received a little over 500 names to undergo the training. “These also include officers and IAS officials,” he added.
The Konkani training manual consisting of 85 pages covers basic Konkani. It has one part covering administrative terms for officers translated into Konkani like ‘at the earliest’, ‘at the instance of’, ‘at this stage’, ‘at your earliest convenience’, etc.
After the training period of one month an examination/test would be held in accordance with the time schedule issued by the Directorate of Official Language.
The syllabus for the training manual was prepared based on the recommendations of a committee coordinated by Dr Tanaji Halarnkar on the lines of Hindi Teaching Scheme of Government of India. The members of the committee are Suresh Borkar, Prof Edward D’Lima, Mukesh Thali and Damodar Ghanekar.

The Konkani writer, Michael Maxim D'Souza, popular in Konkani literary circles as Mick Max (in picture), has been selected for the prestigious Bahrain Konkani Kutam International Award for 2004. The award is in recognition of his contribution to Konkani language, literature, and music for the past 35 years. The award instituted in 2001 carries a purse of Rs. 50,000, a memento, and a citation. Two of his novels have won the Goa Konkani Sahitya Parishat awards. He is also the recipient of Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy award for "Teen Tiatr," a book comprising his famous plays. A trend-setter in Konkani, his plays, novels, and music albums have created a new genre. His recently released Golden Konkani Songs (volume 3) and his new play, "Panjikoor Panchayat Parza" are creating waves in Konkani performing art circles. Mr. Mick Max has to his credit three novels, two short story collections, eight plays, three musical albums, and over 500 articles published in Konkani periodicals.

The social group Bahrain Goans in association with The Folk Theatre are flying in a group of 11 Konkani stage artistes from Goa. The group will present a Konkani musical drama under the direction of Goa’s trendy Comedian Janet and her husband Filipe Almeida. The show titled ‘Soglim Khuxeal’ meaning ‘Happiness to All’ will be staged at the Baan Saeng Thai Restaurant Auditorium in Adliya at 8 p.m on July 9th, 2009.


The show just released in Goa is scheduled to perform in Dubai, Kuwait and in the U.K. as well.



Comedian Janet who has acted for topmost Konkani stage directors is the most sort comedian of late and has several Konkani video films to her credit.

Among the topmost actors accompanying the group is C.D.Silva, known as ‘the man of thousand faces’ for his variety of character roles in Konkani dramas. Shruthi, the child artiste who captured the hearts of the audience during her last visit to Bahrain is once again playing the main role in this drama. The other well known actors in the group are Comedian Ambe, Pascoal Rodrigues, Marcus, Tari, Aldair and Tony de Ribandar. Lenoy Gomendes has directed the musical scores.

A poet, novelist, director and actor, Mr Ratan Thiyam, is all that and more. This well known resident of north-east India, is an impressive personality to meet. Known to be an absolute powerhouse of artistic talent with a recent John D Rockefeller Award, to his credit the man is famous for always putting forward the case of dearly loved, home-state: Manipur. All in all, achievements reflecting deep, abiding, feelings for native land.
Yet, success sits lightly on the great shoulders. Down to earth and engrossed in teaching, he looks deeply involved with the artistes in the isolated environs of the �Black Box, Kala Academy, Panjim. It is a theatre workshop that Mr Thiyam has come down for, and there are no pompous airs while getting the point across to the local students.
Today, the workshop ends, so naturally there is a host of last minute guidance to be given before signing off. Everything has to be just right for the man; the background music, props, ambience and even complete silence from the small group of interested observers watching unobtrusively. Meantime, during a break our visitor is genial enough to grant a quick interview, taking time to reply to each question with a lot of thought.
How does it feel, visiting Goa for the first time and interacting with our budding dramatists? �Fantastic,� is the reply before adding �it is very refreshing kind of experience for me, being in the midst of all these enthusiastic people, who are so very fresh in exposure.�
Our visitor from up north continues happily, �I never thought, I would enjoy myself so much, as this is something that has not been taken up by me for a long time. These days, I am more busy with own experimental theatre. Clearly, teaching is a different experience altogether.�
But, can acting be taught, considering that it is inherently creative in nature? �To a certain extent,� is the response, before going on to explain that the most important aspect to teaching is �to bring out the hidden soul of an actor.�
So, according to this playwright, who has brought out many successful productions in the past, �Each actor has his own calibre or talent.� But, it needs to be �brought out in front of an audience.� Thus, there are certain techniques in acting that could be taught to aspiring actors that could make it easier for them to �express themselves better on stage.�
Pointing out, how Manipur, among the states of north-east India has a rich cultural lineage, Mr Thiyam elaborates, �Theatre, among us is a tradition that goes a long time back. Besides, the linkages from Bengal, the residents have also benefited from their own ethnic �Maite� community background that digs deep into traditional folk lore.�
Yet, one cannot help asking, what about competition from commercial films, that is taking away audience from theatre? �No! No!� the disagreement with this general perception is vigorous and quick. Our eminent personality states, �Many people have the notion that theatre has got marginalised, but that is not so.� He continues, �Theatre has been surviving from the last 6,000 years and will continue to do so. It is like any good work of art with a timeless appeal. Plays that are well crafted and with a story line will grab peoples attention and get the audience to theatres.

TIATR ‘TREAT’ FOR VADODARA GOANS

For centuries, Goans have moved out of their peaceful villages and settled elsewhere for work and employment. It is because of such diasporas that one can find Goans in all parts of the world, whether in large numbers or few. Once settled in some part of the country or outside it, by and large, they still hold fast to their unique lifestyle and culture. At the same time interacting with the other culture as well.



My educational pursuits landed me in Baroda (Vadodara), Gujarat. The Maharaja Sayajirao University hostel in Pratapgunj is close to the Rosary Cathedral and over here I got acquainted with a few Goans. Through Mrs. Charlotte Pereira, I had the opportunity to meet the President of St. Anne’s Club, Mr. Alleluia (Al, for short) D’Costa. We began talking over a delicious dinner which comprised of fish and Goan xitt-koddi prepared by his wife. Truly, I felt home! It is from him that I learnt the presence of a fairly large Goan population in Baroda, comprising of approximately 400 families.

A large Goan population and that too left high and dry without a Konknni tiatr is hard to imagine. This so called void of Konknni theatre in Baroda was filled when Menino Mario’s tiatr ‘Sottor Pauti Saat’ was staged for the first time in Baroda, by a troupe from Ahmedabad. Earlier this tiatr was performed in Ahmedabad too.

Amy Menezes, who actually hails from Colva but is now settled in Ahmedabad, procured the rights to re-stage the tiatr. The play was reproduced on the basis of the script and the video recordings. Joseph Menezes (who happens to be Amy’s husband) also helped in the setting of the drama. And finally after six months of hard practice, the tiatr premiered in Ahmedabad on the 20th of July. It is pertinent to note that all the actors are non-professionals and have managed their other occupations while at the same time giving their all for the tiatr.



The cast of the tiatr includes: Amelina (Amy) Menezes, Alegra, Agnessa Carneiro, Olivia Pereira, Florence, Flory, Darren, Agnelo Frenandes, Domnic Fernandes, Timothy Pereira, Vincy Vaz and Phillip. The music is provided by Joe Michael (Sexaphone), Tony (Bass Guitar), Cassein (Guitar), Richie (Keyboard) and Nicholas (Drums). Agnelo Fernandes is also the co-ordinator.

If the drama in Baroda goes well and everyone appreciates it, there is every likelihood that a tiatr from Goa will soon hit the theatres of Baroda. But the organizers are still reluctant. “It would be very expensive”, admits Al. The organizers only seek subsidized rates for the actual play, rest all expenses would be reimbursed. Maybe some of our Goan artistes can provide a helping hand to them.

Al D’Costa, who is one amongst others instrumental in the staging of the tiatr in Baroda feels that it is an occasion for all the Konknni speaking population of Baroda to come together. “The purpose behind staging the tiatr in Baroda is not commercial. It is an occasion to bond with each other for solidarity,” explained Al.

Another plan which is in the pipe-line is to publish a ‘directory’ of all the Konknni speaking population of Baroda. This plan was conceptualized some three years ago. The directory will be released on the 3rd of December, on occasion of the feast of St. Francis Xavier.

The objective of the publication of the directory, as confided by Al, is to find suitable matches for the would-be grooms and brides as they (Goans in and around Baroda) lose touch with people back home. Secondly, it would help bring Goans together on any enterprise.

The St. Anne’s Club operates like any club in Mumbai. A Goan can find cheap accommodation; members get ‘death benefit’ and can find fellow Goemkars! Accommodation is provided to bachelors and married men who are traveling alone. The club was established some 60-80 years ago.

Al D’Costa as the president of St. Anne’s Club has some very ambitious plans. They are to increase the membership of the club and to enhance the death benefit to an attractive sum. Since the community is mixed economically, plans are afloat to provide financial assistance to the middle and poor classes.

The Club plans to start a co-operative by the donations and lending of the well-to-do class. The interest rates offered will be slightly higher than the ones offered by banks. This co-operative will serve the educational and small business purposes of the people in need. The Club plans to provide some employment to the unemployed, by means of running small errands for other people.

The tiatr “Sottor Pauti Saat” (Seventy Times Seven) is one of the few Konknni dramas to be successfully staged in Baroda. Let us hope that tiatr in Baroda happens often. How about seventy times seven?

PANJIM, APRIL 30 - State Cultural awards were bestowed on 16 personalities for their immense contribution to the field of art and culture, at an impressive function held at Kala Academy here.
The award recipients are: Damodar Mauzo (Literature), Dr Somanath Datta Komarpant (Literature), John Gomes Kokoy(Literature), Maruti Venkatesh Kurdekar (Music), Augustinho Costa alias August De Panchwadi (Music), Ramanand Baboirao Raikar (Music), Mahananda Babuamonkar alias Yelekar (Drama), Patrick Dourado (Tiatro), Maria C Cardozo alias Jessie Dias (Tiatro), Rama Bhima Perni Vaghurmekar (Folk Art), Benicio Vitorino Pereira (Folk Art), Madhusudan Krishna Chari (Bhajan), Madhusudan Gangaram Thali (Bhajan), Shripadbuva Ramkrishna Dhole (Kirtan), Paulino Fernandes (Craft) and Shyam Dulba Kalangutkar (Craft).
The Chief Minister Digambar Kamat who is also the Minister for Art & Culture was the chief guest and presented the awards.
Dr Somanath Komarpant and John Gomes Kokoy also expressed their views.
The CM congratulated the recipients on receiving the awards. He further stated that the directorate had worked really hard to organise the events. The main credit should go to the director and if the captain is efficient and who can bring out the output then the office and Government also runs smoothly. The CM also congratulated the Director of Art and Culture because under his leadership the Department of Art and Culture received ISO 9001 trademark. The CM further said that Government is providing help to the artistes to show their talent exposure in different parts of the country and in the world.
Development Commissioner and Secretary (Art and Culture) Anand Prakash, Chairman of Selection Committee Shreedar Kamat were also present. The Secretary of Art and Culture, Anand Prakash welcomed the guests with the bouquets.
The Chairman of Selection Committee Shreedhar Kamat Bambolkar presented his view on the occasion stating that culture is the heritage of the State and stressed the need to preserve it.
The Director of Art and Culture Prasad Lolyekar proposed the vote of thanks and Tripti Chari compered the function.

MARGAO, JUNE 25 – Maintaining that “tiatr” must be given its rightful place, the BJP Cultural cell has expressed surprise at the step-motherly treatment given to Konkani tiatr by the Kala Academy by deliberately keeping it out of the Goan-multilingual drama festival this year.
BJP Cultural Cell Convenor, Siddhanath Ulhas Buyao said that Konkani tiatr is the cultural heritage of Goa and is by far the most popular drama form in the State today.
“Konkani tiatr today is no more a drama-form of any community, but belongs to all Goans. It is appreciated and supported by all Goans”, he said.
Buyao said during the Ganesh festival, one will find Konkani tiatr being staged in all the mandaps and the audience is from all the communities.
In fact, he said that Konkani tiatr has gained so much popularity in Goa that the name of “Konkani tiatr” should have appeared first in the list of the Kala Academy while organizing the festival.
Buyao said the Cultural Cell of the BJP believes that all drama-forms of Goa should get equal representation in all festivals, organized by the Goa government, without any bias.
“The Kala Academy is in full knowledge, that it’s highest revenue today is coming from Konkani Tiatr alone. Then with what justification do they drop out Konkani Tiatr from such festivals. Is this not a concealed communalism of the Congress. Is this not a Congress type of divide and rule policy”, he asked.
Saying that the BJP does not believe in playing politics with Art & Culture, Buyao said the BJP will take necessary measures with the help of Goan people to ensure the Kala Academy gives due recognition to tiatr.

Since childhood, I have been a tiatr buff and have also sung many a times in these Konkani plays. One has also composed one’s own songs for these Konkani plays. I am also planning to stage my own tiatr next year. However I feel said to find lack of unity among Konkani tiatarist. Directors are jealous of one another.
Today everybody wants to become directors. As a result 60 percent of our Konkani plays flop. It will be good to have 5 to 6 directors rather than having plethora of such so called creative people.
In addition our directors need to ensure that they always have novel and original scripts. We also need to keep in mind the stage setting coupled with sound system is up to a descent standard.
Then only we will be able to have good tiatr’s. I hope our tiatrist will take this humble suggestion for the good of Konkani tiatr.

— Kala Academy Goa invites entries for participation in the forthcoming 34th Tiatr Competition, which will be held from September 8 onwards at the Dinanath Mangeshkar Kala Mandir, Campal, Panjim.
The entries should reach KA latest by August 8 before 4 pm. In a press release, the Kala Academy has appealed to all the desirous institutions registered under the Societies Registration Act 1860 to submit their entries in the prescribed format which is available along with the copy of the rules and regulations of the competition at the Programme and Development Section of KA during office hours.
The rules of the competition have been revised by KA and the institutions will have to pay Rs 100 as entry fee and an amount of Rs 1,000 as Security Deposit, which will be refunded immediately after the performance.
The programme sequence will be decided by KA on August 8 at 4.45 pm by draw of lots in the presence of the representatives of the institutions and thereafter five days time will be given for withdrawal of entries. The participating institutions are also required to submit their registration/ renewal certificate along with the entry form.
All the participating institutions are required to note the revised rules and accordingly submit their entry forms.

Francis de Tuem has gained popularity with the audience for his political songs. He sings for many tiatrs bringing out facts and exposing our corrupt politicians and the police. His caliber of composing is very high. Francis has come out with is first Konkani VCD. As usual he sings two songs exposing the corrupt police and their misbehavior. The sad part of the VCD is in the last song he sings. He begs with the audience to pray for his soul in case he is done away with as there is already a threat to his life but he asserts he will continue his work in spite of the warning. Very daring.!
Like Francis many other tiatrists risk their life for the love of Konkani and the tiatr. They travel late in the night after the show to far off places to return home. They too have a warning or threat from some politicians and the police under pressure to desist from singing political songs.

Prince Jacob his latest tiatr titled 'Ami Chuklim', presents a tale of misguided love, its consequences and the final retribution. There are two families. Joe, his wife, their two sons, Trevor and Reagan and a brother in law called tatrist. The other family has Captain D'Souza, his brother Remete and an only daughter, Sasha. Now Trevor and Sasha are in love but the parents do not agree. So they end up marrying Belinda and Alvito, respectively, after hatching a plan that their love would continue even after their marriage. But do they succeed?
Watch the rest on stage in this sleek production that keeps the viewer engrossed and amused throughout. The script has some beautiful lines and the sets are changed without a hitch, to depict the houses of both the families. Don�t miss the comments on the state of Goan soccer and pay attention to the message that children should be encouraged to prove their talent.
The actors give their best. Annie Quadros is Sasha. A good performance with some humour thrown in, but the red dress and black boots look atrocious. Cookie is Belinda, sings well and dresses just as the scene demands. Watch her in the final moments when she turns down her husband. Bernard is Trevor and Simon is Alvito, the army captain. The former is wonderful as the desperate lover and so is the latter as the military man, playing the tough guy in style. Joe Rose gives another fine performance as the father, Reagan as himself and Jacinto as D�Souza, act well. Jacob is perfect as tiatrist providing plenty of humour but the pick is Humbert as Remete, asking to be called Rambo. His very first entry as the statue and throughout, he had the audience rolling with laughter with his dialogue delivery and actions. Superb!
The opening song is rendered by Annie. In between the acts there are some good solos from Joe Rose S Lemos, Simon Fernandes, Reagan and a trio from Reagan-Jacob-Humbert.

Stating that Konkani society and Konkani culture are the by-product of Konkani language, eminent Sahitya Academy awardee Damodar Mauzo has called for preserving and sustaining this great legacy.
He was speaking at the one-day State level seminar on Konkani Language, Society and Culture organized by the Department of Konkani of MES College in collaboration with Goa Konkani Academy at the College premises.
Dr Olivinho Gomes, ex-Vice-Chancellor of Goa University, Paresh Joshi, Vice-Chairman of Murgaon Education Society, Principal Dr R V Hajirnis, Vice-Principal Dr R B Patil, co-ordinator and Head of Department of Konkani Cosma Fernandes were also present.
Konkani has its own tradition, long history and depicts the culture of Goa. Language helps the society to prosper. By preserving the cultural heritage through language the society can develop,? Mauzo added.
In his keynote address, Dr Olivinho Gomes gave a brief review of the Konkani language and elaborated on the relation between Konkani language, culture and society. In spite of the infiltration of several cultures in Goa, Konkani has maintained its identity with the Goan society. To preserve this age-old tradition of Konkani language, one should not sell the beautiful land of Goa but should preserve it for the future development of Konkani language and culture.
Paresh Joshi while addressing the gathering said that language enriches literature. Therefore, we should be open-minded to the different dialects and scripts of the language.
Cosma Fernandes explained the theme of the seminar to the august gathering and gave a brief history of Konkani literature and narrated the interrelation of Konkani language, culture and society.
Dr R B Patil proposed the vote of thanks while Satyawan Naik compered the inaugural ceremony.
Bhaskar Nayak, Director of Higher Education was the chief guest at the valedictory function.
In his speech, he said, ?the Konkani society should continue speaking in Konkani without falling prey to the influence of other languages. They should preserve the cultural identity by preserving the rich culture and heritage of Goa.
Prof M S Kamat, Vice-President of Murgaon Education Society remarked that literature depicts the true picture of the society. The Konkani society can be depicted in Konkani literature and culture. The more effective is the life, the more effective is the literature. Literature creates awareness in the society and helps to preserve culture.
Principal Dr R V Hajirnis welcomed the gathering while Dr R B Patil introduced the guest.
Prof Satish Bhute of St Xavier's College, Mapusa and Prof Sanjay Govekar of GVM's College of Education, Ponda commented on the seminar while Prof Hanumant Chopdekar of Chowgule College presented a report of the seminar proceedings.
In the first technical session, Dr Prakash Vazrikar, a play writer and lecturer presented the paper on Depiction of society in Konkani Natak. Mr. Tomazinho Cardozo, an eminent tiatrist presented a paper on ?Depiction of society and culture in tiatr.
Dr. Francisco Colaco gave a lucid presentation on ?Depiction of culture and society in Mando.
Prof. Newman Fernandes, Principal of St Xavier?s College, Mapusa chaired the first session.
The second technical session was chaired by Dr Narayan Desai, Principal of SS Angle Higher Secondary School, Dr Kiran Budkule presented a paper on Depiction of Culture and Society in Konkani Short Stories?. The eminent Sahitya Academy awardee Mhableshwar Sail presented a paper on ?Depiction of Culture and Society in Konkani Novel.
Dr Pandurang Phaldesai, Member Secretary of Kala Academy presented a paper on Depiction of Culture & Society in folklore. Students also spoke on the occasion.
Prof Cosma Fernandes proposed the vote of thanks while Ms Prerna Halankar compered the programme.
Konkani lecturers, teachers, students and eminent writers attended.
