by J P Pereira

The ‘Gulab’ Awards, promoted by the Konkani magazine ‘Gulab’ were instituted in the year 1983 to recognise and encourage talent on the Konkani stage by the late Fr Freddy J da Costa. This is the 25th year of presenting these prestigious awards on the 20th July, 2007 the 54th birthday of Fr Freddy, the editorial board of ‘Gulab’ in association with Manfa Music, Margao presented trophies not only to artistes of the Konkani stage but also to writers, sports persons and other personalities. The programme was well organised, the presentation of awards interspersed with Konkani songs and four comedy skits, which the audience enjoyed.

The award for the personality of the year went to Dr Oscar Rebello, for the agitation he led against the draconian Regional Plan. In his short speech, the good doctor urged Goans to keep the interest of Goa above all.

The award for a Konkani writer in Roman Script went to Cruzinho R Pinho and Stefi Vaz bagged the award for sports. Some personalities were felicitated for their good work in promoting the Konkani language and other social issues. These included Sudha Amonkar, Remmie Colaco, Romaldo Rodrigues, G R Crasto and Daniel F D’Souza. These were presented with a citation and a shawl.

The awards for best actor on the Konkani stage was bagged by Peter de Benaulim for his role of a lecherous rich man in Rosefern’s ‘Goemkar’. Rosy Alvares was declared best actor, for her outstanding performance of a handicapped person in Mario Menezes’ heart touching drama, ‘Tachem Chintat Tinvuim mhonxeam’. This drama also fetched its writer and director, Mario Menezes, the award for best script and best director.

The best comedian award went to ben Evangelisto for a wonderful imitation of the late Jacinto Vaz in the grand revival of M Boyer’s Konkani drama ‘Sounsar Sudhorlo’. Sharon bagged the award for best female singer while Osvi viegas was declared the best male singer.

The award for best musician went to Norman Cardozo for his score in the drama ‘Pallam’ written and directed by Donald Colaco.

The awards were presented for the year 2005- 2006.

In between the presentation of awards, the audience were treated to some nice songs by Lawry Travasso, Pascoal Rodrigues, C d’Silva, Osvi Viegas and Felcy. A humorous comedy skit in four parts, written and directed by Agostinho Temudo featuring Janet, Anita, Ambe, Selvy and Agostinho kept the audience in splits. A VCD of a film titled ‘Vadoll’ was also released.

The function was compered in style by Annie Quadros with Mario Menezes and the felicitation was conducted by Agnelo de Bori. Norman Cardozo provided the beautiful music and while Fausto V da Costa, editor of the ‘Gulab’ spoke on the magazine and the importance of the awards, Fabian G da Costa proposed the vote of thanks and stated that the awards were presented on the basis of points awards by an independent panel of judges.

We hope that the magazine ‘Gulab’ continues to recognise and reward genuine talent from Goa.

Eka Patkiak Lagon

WAGES OF SIN

By Daniel F De Souza

A BRIEF romantic misadventure, an illegitimate child, a broken love affair, a miscarriage, followed by a cold blooded murder and consequential suicide all neatly inter-woven together in a plot and you have a absorbing play called “Eka Patkiak Lagon .” The title of the play itself is very catchy giving one the chance to contemplate and imagine. The gist of the plot is how a happy life can take a negative turn and cause irreparable damage all for the sake of one sinner. A sleek presentation ‘Ek Patkiak Lagon' is presently drawing good crowds in the major towns of Goa .

I do not however wish to spell out the story line in detail, since this show is scheduled to be staged through this monsoon season. Nevertheless, as is the trademark of Roseferns shows, “Eka Patkiak Lagon” too has a very intricate and twisty tale, which keeps the audience guessing for the major part of the play. The show however goes a little beyond the customary three hours. The show begins with an opening chorus sung in pairs by six different artistes. This is something different from what we usually see. The opening scene is excellent in its depiction, relevant to the plot and well executed with the appropriate light and sound settings. It received a spontaneous and thunderous applause at Panjim from the viewers. Good work by Tony de Ribandar.

The play which begins on a romantic note at the foot of a village cross also has the most revealing part of the plot at the fag end at the very same spot. Nadia (Roshan) and Rahul (Victor) are deeply in love. Rahul the only son of wealthy Jeremias Machado (Roseferns) reveals his love story to this father. Rahul's father accepts his choice and there is no opposition of any kind.

Jeremias is willing to get his son Rahul married to Nadia. But, when Jeremias visits Nadia's residence to confirm and settle the marriage proposal with Nadia's mother Nancy, (Kezia) the story takes a different turn altogether. There is a quick exchange of emotional words between Nancy and Jeremias in the absence of their two children. The scene is effectively shown with good light effects and background music.

What follows next is a shocking revelation. I do not wish to reveal the secret for it will spoil the charm of seeing the play. Jeremias who all this time was in favour of the marriage of his son Rahul to Kezia does a volte face. He is against the marriage and like a responsible father and in atonement for his past mistake reveals the entire truth behind his behaviour to his son. This is a very absorbing scene and both father and son portray the emotions very well. What happens next, is that Rahul leaves his father's house and goes away without leaving any clue of this whereabouts. He returns back several years later as a priest. Surprised, aren't you? This is what keeps the story moving ahead to reveal the actual sinner.

A touching scene from Eka Patkiak Lagon.
What happens to Nadia one may ask, does she join the convent?? No, she is shattered no doubt with the sudden turn of events and disappearance of Rahul. Her love is too strong and she still pines and longs for Rahul. Nadia spurns off the romantic overtures from Joy a youth who has just returned from Bangalore . Kezia, the daughter of Jeremias enters the scene on her return from Bangalore after finishing her studies. She has her eyes on Joy, but Joy gives her the cold shoulder for he has his eyes set on pretty Nadia. Well, as they say all is fair in love and war, Nadia finally relents and with the help of Jeremias she proposes to Joy and they are happily married. Kezia wants to get even. She combines with Rubberband (Peter) to fulfill her plans. Now, why does Jeremias come to the help of Nadia in getting her married to Joy?? What is the reason for his fatherly concern in the well being of this girl named Nadia?? Well, Jeremias has a valid reason for that little extra concern, and the viewer is all aware of this right through the plot except for Nadia.

The marriage of Joy and Nadia is solemnised by Fr. Rahul, and something strange happens at the time of the nuptials. Thereafter several twists and turns brings Fr. Rahul and Nadia together once again under different circumstances. This gives rise to suspicion in the mind of Joy. He begins to ill treat Nadia, Rubberband and Kezia add fuel to the already burning fire. Nadia conceives but, Joy in his fit of anger and misunderstanding suspects Nadia's fidelity. She undergoes a miscarriage on account of Joy's violent behaviour. Another twist. There is the sudden disappearance of Fr. Rahul. Nobody knows his whereabouts.

What happens finally and how the innocence of Nadia is vindicated in the end is well narrated . But, not before sufficient damage is done and couple of lives are lost under tragic circumstances. All this for the sake of a single sinner!! See the play with your family for it does have a message. Comedians Agostinho Temudo as a corrupt to the core Inspector Joao Baptista Costa and Sally combine extremely well to bring about hilarious laughter at intermittent intervals. Agostinho is just too much and portrays the character very closely with a smooth shaven skull. His actions, dialogue delivery and actions evoke natural laughter. Sally has given good account of himself as a natural comedian opposite Agostinho. The humorous telephone conversation between Inspector Joao Baptista and the caller at the Police station and later the jokes on Valentine Day and Children's Day are really good.

Kezia the newcomer to the Roseferns troupe is a good pick and she has given commendable performance in a double role. She sings and emotes well too. Victor is good in the role of the priest and his singing talents are well exploited by the Director. Ulhas Tari as Joy is very dashing and natural in the role. Looks very confident and well poised. He has also lent his voice well to the opening chorus. Peter (Rubberband) plays a different and a difficult role altogether, but, he has given a polished and appreciative performance in this negative role. His change of costumes suits him well in the given role. Roshan is also good and natural as Nadia and has lent her melodious voice very well to all the ‘kantos' she sings. Roseferns takes the cake for his portrayal of the rich man and sensible father Jeremias Machado.

Juju and his naughty boys have provided soothing musical score and the background music is pleasing and soft without clashing with the delivery of dialogue. Aires Almeida as the light man has done a good job. And the message in “Eka Patkeak Lagon” is loud and clear, ‘Keep away from sin if you want to lead a good life without any misfortunes. A single sinner can sink the boat of your life.'

Hea Gharachim Dharam Bondh

Hea Gharachim Dharam Bondh delights Goans
RICHARD RODRIGUES

He came! He saw! He
conquered! Hearts and minds of tiatr lovers in Goa. A verdict unanimously pronounced by those who thronged to see Laurente Periera’s gripping drama, ”Hea Gharachim Dharam Bondh”.
After successfully staging the tiatr in Kuwait in late 2006, Laurente made an indelible impression on the Konkani stage in Goa by presenting his tiatr to capacity audiences in Panjim, Margao, Mapusa, Sanvordem, Morjim, and in his native home town Utorda.
The tiatr unfolds a very fascinating and intriguing story powered by love, hatred, jealousy, deceit, and interlaced with rib-tickling comedy.
The story revolves around father Baltazar(Roseferns), his two lovely daughters, Cynthia(Felcy), Sonia(Olga), and a habitually inebriated son Trevor(Pascoal Rodrigues). While Cynthia gets happily married to Dylan(Mathew Araujo), Sonia is double-crossed at the altar for not providing the promised dowry.
Now enter the devil-incarnate Vicky(Anil Pednekar) to unleash his evil machinations as the plot unfolds with suspenseful twists and turns, climaxing with good triumphing over evil.
The Kuwait-based artistes, namely Cajetan, Marcus, and the director Laurente, have given excellent performances but it is the comedy queen Querobina who shines with her wonderful portrayal, reappearing on stage in Goa after a lapse of 15 years.
The artistes from Goa like Olga, Felcy, Meena, Lawry, Osvy, Peter-Roshan, Victor, Mathew, Anil, and comedians Agostinho and Selvy are sheer delight to watch but the king of centuries Roseferns and the prince of centuries Pascoal Rodrigues bask in the limelight with superlative performances.
The solos, duets, trios, quartets are beautifully rendered, but it is the Octet, a rarity on modern stage that steals the thunder with excellent rendition.
The musical score by Anthony de Velim with Goa’s ace musicians is appealingly enjoyable as also the special light effects by Iris, particularly the visual illustration in which the crown from the head of the statue of Mother Mary floats and rests on the head of Sonia as a sign of divine intercession.
The stage setting is par excellence, especially the first time display in Goa of scenes of the Kuwait towers, the Liberation tower, and the 3-Banks complex, the landmark features of Kuwait.
Kudos to the director Laurente Pereira who apparently, has burnt a lot of midnight oil to bring such a magnum opus on stage.
The drama is an all-out entertainer, the memories of which are bound to linger in the minds of tiatr lovers for a long, long time.

Purtugez Goenkar

GOENKARS WAKE UP!

By Daniel F de Souza

PATRICK DOURADO’S tiatr ‘Purtugez Goenkar’ produced by Samuel Carvalho is presently having a good run with house-full shows. The writer Patrick Dourado has touched on a contemporary topic prevalent in Goan society. The name ‘Purtugez Goenkar’ itself is suggestive and gives one a faint idea what to expect and see in the play. It is a story of those Goans who are now lured by the British Pounds and acquire Portuguese Nationality to head to the West for greener pastures. But then what is the fate of their families and ancestral homes and properties back home in Goa is best seen in ‘Purtugez Goenkar’. For more reasons than one, ‘Purtugez Goenkar’ depicts what’s in store for Goa and Goans in the long run if the present trend of expatriation continues.

‘Purtuguez Goenkar’ is a story of a poor widow. Eliza Carvalho(Betty Naz) who is forced to sell her land to a Gujarati Patel Bhai so that she can pay a huge sum to the recruiting agent to send her son George (Franklin) to the Gulf. Caitan (Samuel Carvalho) a village drunkard acts as the middleman and convinces Eliza to part with her prime property to this non-Goan businessman. George returns back to Goa after spending only a year in the Gulf and acquires a Portuguese Passport and proceeds to London. In the meantime Patel Bhai who is a shrewd businessman builds a huge mansion next door to Eliza. He prospers in his business venture too.

THE FAMOUS THREE: Taking the Goan political to task.
Eliza’s second son Jack (Ulhas Tari ) an engineer by profession is under the spell of his dominating wife Shaina (Roshan) also dreams of making it big someday. Jack is coerced by his domineering wife Shaina into acquiring a Portuguese passport too. Jack, a henpecked husband, has no say in any matter. They leave their ancestral home in Goa and fly to London. The mother and sister Roma are left behind to fend for themselves. The mother is shell shocked, but she has no say whatsoever in the matter. She only hopes that everything will have a happy ending. Now she is left with the support of her daughter Roma back home. Roma is having a romantic affair on the sly with Ashwin (Philip Almeida) Patel Bhai’s only son. Ashwin’s father is against this match and wants to teach Roma a befitting lesson. He seeks the help of Caitan. Evil and bad that he is, Caitan promises to support Patel in his evil designs. Seeing the events that unfold in Carvalho’s household, Patel Bhai nurtures a silent desire and has his eyes set on their property and house.

What happens next and the fate that awaits innocent Roma changes the story line and the fate of the Carvalho household for the rest of their lives. On the other hand things are not so rosy for Shaina and Jack who are now in London. Jack is remorseful and recollects his happy days in Goa, and is not too happy with his job as a petrol pump attendant in London. Fate strikes further when Shaina meets with a tragic end in a bomb explosion. George on the other hand marries a British girl. Meanwhile tragedy strikes back home in Goa, the ending is sad and thought provoking at the same time.

Patrick Dourado has indeed chosen a good subject for his play, however the plot could have been handled with some more emphatic sub-plots to enhance the impact of the play further. The story moves at a slow pace. All the artists in the play have marginally small roles with Betty Naz as Mrs. Carvalho shouldering a much bigger and responsible role. Nevertheless, the play does have a meaningful message relevant to the present tendency among Goans to acquire Portuguese nationality and leave the shores. The writer-director has made extensive use of audio visuals to portray certain scenes which could have otherwise not been possible to depict live on stage. The scenes that have been effectively shown with the help of the audio visual presentation are the explosion at the petrol pump, a suicide attempt by jumping from the bridge, the railway station and the arrival of the train, a discotheque in distant London etc. Though this is nothing new to the Konkani stage, the Director deserves kudos for attempting such a smooth integration of the audiovisuals in the main plot on stage. These lively scenes really hold the attention of the audience.

THE OTHER SIDE OF THE FENCE: Immigrating to the west can prove fatal.
Another novel thing shown by the Director is the opening song, which is sung in style by Anthony San. The song has some meaningful lyrics and outlines the finer aspects of tiatr, right from the stage of it’s conceptualising, script writing, directing, rehearsals, song and band rehearsals etc. The lyrics are well supported by relevant shots of audiovisuals. The show has many renowned singers and so the audience is treated to a large dose of solos, duets, trios. Among the solo singers, Osy Viegas, S. Lemos, Xavier, Succorine render some pleasant solos. The comedy duet by Anthony San and Succorine was also well received. Two more duets by Peter-Roshan though with a good subject didn’t make much impact.

The Trio kings however take the major share of the cake with two excellent trios. Joaquim-Jr. Rod-Anthony sing a touching tribute to the late Fr. Freddy J. da Costa. The trio has some excellent lyrics and was heard with pin drop silence by the house-full audience. They return after the interval to take the stage by storm with another of their political song. The song has been composed based entirely on the lead stories carried by the weekly Goan Observer over the weeks on the Goan political scene. Some of the Goan politicians who were taken to task included Mathany Saldhana, Radharao, Dr. Wilfred De Souza, and IFFI imbroglio too was highlighted duly displaying the respective issue of the paper on a roller-stand.

Patrick has composed some nice ‘kantos’ and it is pleasant to hear Betty Naz rendering most of them in her inimitable style. ‘Purtugez Goenkar’ brings forth some good acting by Konkani stage veterans. The producer Samuel Carvalho excels in the role of the evil man Caitan and depicts the character well. So also Betty Naz is very natural in the mothers’ role and brings the character to life. Anil Kumar is very much realistic in the character role of the Gujarati Patel Bhai, however, his dialogues with the Gujarati accent are a little hard to understand and could have been delivered a little slower. Tari and Franklin have marginally small roles and they give a good account as the two ambitious sons. Roshan and Roma in two opposite roles are also fairly good. Anthony San plays a small but effective role of a doctor and Philip Almeida as Ashwin is quite impressive.

Once again the writer has laid a fair emphasis on the comedy. The comedy trio of Comedian Agostinho, Selvy and Soccorine keep the audience in splits for a fairly long time. The trio is well supported by Antonette. Agostinho and Selvy combine well to bring about good laughter. The stage settings by Saldhana are quite impressive, though nothing new. The stage sets shows the frontal view of Patel Bhai’s bungalow and the side elevation of Mrs. Carvalho’s house. Maestro Juju has provided the musical score for the play ably supported by Agnelo Dias on the Trumpet.

Briton, Sharon, Osvi Viegas, Bab Peter, Babli, Betty Naz and Nephie Rod.

‘Master plan’ a trio by the trio kings is the first track on the album followed by a sentimental solo ‘Nimanno Adeus’ (lyrics Sylvester) sung by Lorna in which she pays rich tributes to her mentor the late Chris Perry. M. Boyer’s ‘Gulfakarancho Power’ a comedy solo adds glamour while ‘Kantteachi Vatt’ (lyrics H. Briton) sung by Antonette Mendes brings out her sweet sentimental voice. Bab Peter’s all time hit ‘Magnnem’ finds a place in this album followed by a very old duet ‘Ghovachem Ghor’ by Mohana & Alex.

‘Satvo Sacrament’ a very popular track by versatile Jr. Rod makes good listening with meaningful lyrics and good music backup. Comedian Sucorina adds luster to the album with her voice singing a comedy solo ‘Dil Mera Thoda na’ (lyrics H.Britona) to a famous Hindi melody. Versatile solo singer Jose Rod’s presence is strongly felt in his solo ‘Magnnem’ (lyrics Katty de Navelim). Tragedy Queen Ophelia sings a sensational duet ‘Besanv Zaem’ (lyrics Bab Peter) together with late Romeo Mendes. Foot-taping music follows next with H.Briton belting out a comedy solo ‘ Love-aria’ (own lyrics) . Highlighting the dangers of AIDS in her sentimental solo with the same name is silky voiced Sharon (lyrics Osvi Viegas).

‘Divors by Osvi Viegas, Jivitachi Chavi (lyrics Bab Peter) sung by Babli, Isabela a duet by Betty Naz & H. Briton (lyrics H.Briton) and as solo Ghorkar by Nephie Rod’ are the final tracks on the audio album which are all worth listening and adding to the collection. The last track on the CD album is once again focused on the dangers of AIDS and has some thought provoking lyrics, rendered beautifully by the Mumbai based singer Nephie Rod.

The musical score provided for the various tracks on the album is by Maestro Josinho, Tony Dias, Babush, and Agostinho Da Cruz. The album is priced at Rs. 150/- and is available at all leading music stores across the state. Go for it and add it to your collection of Konkani music.

-Daniel F. de Souza, Goa

Comedian Selvy has virtually scored an ace with the release of his first comedy film ‘Bekar Louddi’. This fast paced comedy video is marketed under the banner of Cat Video and is available at all the leading music stores in Goa. Those who have been closely following the performance of comedian Selvy over the period must have surely noticed that he has moulded into a fine comedy artist in recent times. The richness of his acting talents has now surfaced in full flow. This comedy video is a confirmation of his creativity with writing comedy script.

‘Bekar Louddi’ is a comedy highlighting the pursuits of an unemployed youth (comedian Selvy) eager to get married an lead his life, unmindful of the consequences that may follow. But, the problem is, he does not have a steady job and lives with a care a damn attitude. He is very playful like a school going kid and has a deadly liking for any kind of sports. Sports and games take a first precedent in his life over any other things. The youth is mired with problems from day one of his marriage. While he is on his way to the church for his nuptials his attention is drawn to the young boys on the road side playing marbles and he is automatically drawn to the game. Later on he is called upon to take part in a penalty shoot out, crazy for football that he is, he obliges. It is fun watching a young man dressed in his wedding suit manning the goal post in a penalty shot out. The bride (comedian Janet) in the meantime is left high and dry at the church waiting for her groom to arrive. The events that follow next are even more hilarious. The bride riding a cycle along the village roads dressed in her wedding gown and searching for her groom is not only funny but very well captured on frame.

Comedian Janet ably supports comedian Selvy as his unfortunate wife in this video and is part of all his pursuits and adventures in a laugh a minute riot. The comedy in this video is further enhanced with the presence of comedian Agostinho Temudo who plays the character of a beggar and is the President of the All Goa beggars Union. He leads a large group of beggars who go around in an organized manner. This is an entirely new breed of beggars who go about their job at strategic locations in a dignified and hi-fi manner begging for alms totally suited and booted. Some of the comedy sequences shown with respect to begging and the tactics they employ to earn their daily bread are well depicted. Comedian Agostinho with his natural flair for sleek comedy ably supported by the other comedians is a treat to watch.

A couple of comedy sequences involving comedian Selvy and comedian Agostinho evokes natural laughter like the one when Selvy sharpens the daggers and Agostinho misunderstands the purpose behind such an action. Then there is the incidence of the simple comedy sequence connected to a supposedly mobile conversation. But the final outcome is good and is a proof of Selvy’s fertile mind in creating comedy. Comedian Janet has given her best in her role as a young bride and wife and is natural in every sequence. So is comedian Selvy, who has taken good care to depict the character in all its finer aspects. The day to day adventures of this young couple and the manner in which they go about their married life is what provides the basis for comedy.

The videography and editing is done by Joywin Fernades and Lenoy Gomendes has provided the music and background music.
