GOA KONKANI AKADEMI 6th TIATR-WRITING COMPETITION


Goa Konkani Akademi has declared the result of its 6th tiatro-writing competition held in the name of 'Pai Tiatrist Joao Agostinho Fernandes', the first tiatrist of Konkani stage.

Bonicio Vitorin Pereira has won the first prize of Rs.4000 for his script "Ashirwad" which will be published soon in book form by the Akademi as per the provision.

The second prize winner is Albert D'Souza (Rs.3000) for his script "Mummy, Mhaka Tuje Vengent Dhor", while the third prize of Rs.2,000 has been won by Agnelo Fernandes for his script "Fantodd".

Buyao honoured in Kuwait

Kuwait Goa Tiatristanchi Sonvstha, Kuwait, honoured Goem Shahir Ulhas Buyao for his contribution to art and culture and Konknai movement by Kuwait-Goa Tiatristanchi Sonvstha (KGTS), at a function held at Hawally hall, Salmiya, Kuwait, recently. Speaking on the occasion, Coelho remembered Buyao’s contribution at the time of Opinion Poll and narrated the audience some moments of the Opinion Poll.

Famous triatrists Mario Menezes and Roseferns, and musicians Babush and Philip were also honoured on the occasion. The function was coordinated by Jose Rod. President Katty de Navelim and member Cajie de Sanvordem were on the dais. Buyao sang his favourites like “Chan’neache Rati”, “Deva Mhojya Deva” and special song which he had composed specially on Goans living in the Gulf. He was accompanied by his son Sidhanath Buyao on the keyboard. A play was performed by renowned tiatrists John D’Silva, Ambe, Selly, Rosy and Joana along with artistes working in Kuwait.

Zomni khell during the Carnival

Here is a short account of the zomni khell during the Carnival in my village, Chinchinim.

Zomniche khell were mostly popular during Carnival (Intruz) and Paskanchem
fest (Easter). After the New year and three kings feast, people eagerly
waited for the Carnival
because of the khells, especially in the villages of Salcete.

In Chinchinim, there are 15-20 wards or Vadde. Each Vaddo has a place
called 'Mandd',
which was usually located close to a Chapel which was surrounded by trees.
Khell was mostly performed at the "mandd" or near Regidor's residence
and sometimes in pvt homes if they could afford.(mostly tarvotti )
The ward committee members collected a small amount (Rs 5 at my time) from
each house to organize a khell.

A Khell was formed by a group of artists. The head or the writer/director
was called ‘Mestri’ and other participants were khellgaddi.
The band consisted of instruments like drum, trumpet, clarinet and at times
a banjo.
With the exception of band members, all other members of the troupe wore a
colourful uniform. There were no ladies taking part in the khell, but some
gents enacted ladies’ role; they wore a sari or a dress. Anita Pereira from
Chinchinim was the first girl to act in a khell called "Mundkar Nores'.

The famous khell groups came mostly from the coastal villages of Carmona,
Varca, Benaulim, Colva, Betalbatim (Bettpatte), besides some groups from
Chinchinim, Verna and St. Jose de Areal.

In those days, they mostly travelled on foot from one village to another
and/or from one ward to another. In the late 70's and 80's, they started
travelling by mini buses or open tempos. Wherever they traveled, they
always played music .. the drum, snare drum, trumpet and clarinet.

When a khell reached a 'mandd', the ward members negotiated the price of an
act/play..depending on the popularity of the group. If a group was famous
one,
then they would agree for two acts/plays. At times when the mestri or
ward members could not reach an agreement, the troupe would leave the
'mandd' but not without singing one or two songs at the 'mandd'; this was to
give respect for the 'mandd'. If they reached an agreement, they would give
time for the mestri to start the play till most ward people arrived.

As kids, the moment we heard the beat of the drum, we used to run, leaving
whatever work we did, and so did our elders. A round circle was formed and
the children had to sit on the ground; the elders stood around them. Some
would get chairs if their houses were close by; others would make it on tree
tops.

One got to see many khell in my ward ‘Dandeavaddo’ in Chinchinim as it is
located on the main junction of Cuncolim-Sarzora road.

The khell would start with an Imno - opening chorus, wherein the khellgaddi
would stand in two rows in front of the band and introduce themselves, and
the act that was to follow. After the Imno, they would stand in a circle
and then start the play with dialogues, followed by a song which was sung in
two pitches. – primeiro and segundo. The songs were mostly related to the
story or dialogue. At the end of the song, if the act required them to
visit another house, they would say: “Atam
hanv kit kortolom?” .. “Matxe bazrant voitolom” and then as he started to
walk, the music would play. If there was a police, the popular police march
would follow.

The plays were mostly based on short stories of bhatkars..kunbis, Akbar and
Birbal etc. Children were fascinated with the 'Rakhos' or Rakesh...(Giant )
part wherein the actor would wear a black dress covering his whole body from
head to toe with a tail hanging from behind.

At times there would be 2-3 groups waiting to perform at the same "mandd".
This way, all the 3 days of Intruz would go on. But their performance was
best on the first and the second day, as by the third day they would be
exhausted and their voices would become rough.

There was khell competition during the Carnival, which was performed on
stage. The competition was mostly with rival groups; whoever won, was
awarded a big trophy. In course of time, these competitions were with the
Tiatros. The first to perform was a tiatro, a short one, and then a
khell...ultimately it gave rise to what is now called ‘Khell Tiatr’.

Mestri Kuddo Minguel from Chinchinim was famous for the ‘opari’; also Sucor
Piedade from Verna. There was another mestri from Carmona..Anton Marie
whose khells with emotional dialogues and opari mesmerized the hearts of the
people....Francis Mestri from Durga was famous for his songs while Buk Buko
from Chinchinim and Xempea Minguel from Benaulim made the people laugh.
Mestri Niclau Marian from Nesai and Santiago Pereira from Padde khells were
also good. The only Hindu to act in khells in those days was Gunno from
Chandor. Marian from Vhodlem Bhatt Benaulim and Don Toklo from Colva were
also very famous mestris, besides the well known Xalibai, F.Coloi and
Bhataghotto.

Antonio Moraes .. well known as A. Moraes was the first to make changes and
take the zomni khell on the stage...and thereafter the best of the Khells
were seen on stage; the famous groups refused to perform on the ground; they
performed only on stage...Vitorin Pereira, Patrick Dourado and Ligorio
Fernandes were famous on stage. Slowly, these khells were aired on Akashwani
as 'Lokham khell'.

It was in the early 70's, the late Rosario Rodrigues came up with a non-stop
show...'Ekech Ratri ani Ami Fator'. This show was well received by the
people and it completed more than 100 shows in Goa and Mumbai. From then
on, every show of Rosario was a hit!

A lot of changes have been made from the original zomni khell to the present
Tiatro, but the smaller groups still perform the zomni khell. The present
day Tiatr is a combination of the old zomni khell and tiatr, in that the
Khell had songs which were related to the story, whereas in a tiatr, the
songs sung were not related to the story.

Some of the current well known khell-tiatrs come from: Prince Jacob, Mario
Menezes,
Roseferns, Menino Mario..Jose Rod, etc.

Margao, Dec 19 In bid to obtain official status for the Roman script,
the Romi Lipi Action Front (RLAF), on Wednesday, urged the government
to include the Roman script in the Official Language Act of 1987.The
Front has also demanded that the government table and pass a bill in
the Goa Legislative Assembly, recognizing the seven Goans – Floriano
Vaz from Gogol, John Fernandes, Audrin Fernandes, Inacio Gonsalves,
Cajetan Dias, Mathew Gracias and Joaquim Pereira, all from Agassaim --
who lost their lives in the struggle for recognition of Konkani
language, as Konkani martyrs.The government should also erect statutes
of the seven Martyrs in the state, and give their families all
facilities enjoyed by the freedom fighters of Goa, the Front demanded.

Father Pratap Naik of the Thomas Stephens Konkani Kendr blamed the
people."When I go to address Konkani lovers in Karnataka 10,000 people
gather in no time to hear me. Why such poor response in Goa?" he
asked, referring to the attendance at the Lohia Maidan, in Margao.

The meeting was organized by the Romi Lipi Action Front to honour the
`Konkani Martyrs', on Wednesday.

Elaborating further, he said people from Karnataka speak in Kanada,
Keralites converse in Malyalam and the citizesn from Kashmir in
Kashmiri. "Only Goans take pride in speaking the language of English,"
he lamented."We need to shout, scream and yell so that our legislators
know our desire," he said making a passionate appeal, on need to
remain united, to get recognition for the Roman script.

Former Vice-Chancellor of Goa University, Dr Olivinho Gomes said that
there was a need to start a new struggle to get recognition for Roman
script.Much injustice has been done to the Konkani lovers who express
themselves in Roman script, he said and stressed the need to rectify
the same.Quoting former Sahitya Academy President, Mr S Chatterjee, he
said, Mr Chatterjee was of the opinion that only Roman script would
solve the acrimony over the dual scripts in Goa.

He said government should stop issuing executive orders on giving
grants to Roman script writers. Instead the Roman script should get
official recognition in the language Act, he added.

The President of the Dalgado Konkani Akademi and former speaker, Mr
Tomazinho Cardozo, Prinicipal of St Xaviers College, Mr Newman
Fernandes, former director of AIR, Mr Yusuf Shaikh, Fr Conceisao Da
Silva, Mr Miguel Braganza and many others spoke. ENDS.

This is a fairly accurate report of the meeting held to honour the
young men, most of them around 20 years of age, who were killed during
the KONKANI PORJECHO AVAZ-led agitiation in 1986 that gave us Konkani
as the Official language and , through the language, Statehood. The
POLITICIANS benefitted by the increase in the number of MLAs in Goa
from 28 in the UT of Goa, Daman & Diu to 40 in the state of Goa. The
power of the Chief Minister increased and he was no longer palying a
second fiddle to the Lt. Governor. The Devanagri lobby got a Goa
Konkani Academy almost exclusively to itself for 20 years, Sahitya
Puroskars for those whose newspaper articles were hurriedly compiled
and printed in book form, jobs for their chelas as teachers since 1992
,etc. The majority of the agitators and 100% of the martyrs knew not
how to read and write in Devanagri. Their families are as poor as in
1986 and still cannot read the Devangri script to file an application
in the Official Language. To what end was their sacrifice? Think about
it.

Goan Tiatr - Not a Folk Drama

The other day Mr Paul Moras, a Konkani writer from Mangalore, came to meet me to get some more information on the Goan tiatr. Mr Moras is writing a book on Goan culture and the study of tiatr is a part of his book. When I told him that the Goan tiatr is a product of the fusion of modern drama and song, he could not believe it because everyone he had contacted in Goa in this regard - ( writers of Konkani in Devnagari scripts ) - had told him that Goan tiatr is a folk drama. I have also observed that Mr Pundalik Naik in his article ‘The tiatr Magic’ in the book ‘Redefining Horizons’ published by the department of information and publicity, government of Goa also gives the impression that the Goan tiatr is a folk play. Mr Vinayak Vishnu Khedekar, in his book ‘Loksarita’ in Marathi published by the Kala Akademy of Goa says that the soul of tiatr is folk drama. In the recently published catalogue “Tiatristes - Portraits by Alex Fernandes”, Mr Ranjit Hoskote in his introductory essay calls Goan tiatr a folk form of theatre. There are many other Konkani writers who consider Goan tiatr a form of folk theatre. My question is, on what basis can Goan tiatr be classified as a folk form of drama?

Writers who consider tiatr to be a folk drama have not understood the difference between tiatr and khell-tiatr. For them both are the same. In reality Khell-tiatr is an extension of the Goan folk play called khell or fell. About 30-35 years ago, the khell or fell, which was earlier performed on the ground, came to be performed on stage. Since that day it was called khell-tiatr. There is no doubt that it had a folk element in it when it was staged for the first time. Today khell-tiatr also shows no signs of folk theatre.

As I understand, a folk dramas or songs or music are generally limited to the knowledge transmitted from one generation to another by word of mouth or imitation. Their composers and writers are unknown. There are no written records of the prose, music and song. The music is crude, the singers are hoarse, musical instruments rustic and traditional and musicians unrefined. In case of the tiatr there is no such evidence whatsoever to say that it belongs to the folk category.

The confusion about the tiatr being a folk drama has arisen because some people do not have a proper understanding of the concept of tiatr. The tiatr has prose as well as music and song. Hence, it cannot be classified as a prose drama or a musical drama. The plot is divided into six or seven acts called ‘Podd’dde’. In between these acts there are two or three songs - kantaram - which are not related to the storyline of the play at all. Each song is composed on a different theme. Therefore if the plot of the play is based on a particular theme then it will have 12 to 14 songs based on various issues.

Let us examine how the tiatr format evolved. The first tiatr “Italian Bhurgo” was written by Lucasinho Ribeiro and staged in Mumbai on April 17, 1892. This tiatr was an adaptation of the Italian opera called ‘Italian Boy’. When Mr Ribeiro encountered difficulties setting up the stage for different scenes (time was wasted during the change of setting), he thought of introducing songs in front of the curtain while the stage was being set for the next scene behind the curtain. This way the audience was not bored. He succeeded in his first attempt. And this format came to be known as tiatr. The source of the script was known. The writer was also known. Secondly, the musical instruments used to provide music for the songs included a violin, a banjo, a trumpet, a saxophone and a drum. There were no rustic musical instruments used nor were the songs traditional. The musicians had studied music and learnt to read and write the score. This format came into existence during the days when there was tremendous influence of European modern theatre on Indian theatre.

After the success of the first tiatr ‘Italian Bhurgo’ Lucasinho Ribeiro translated some more world classics such as Alladin, Ali Baba and Carlos Magno. Sebastiao Gabriel D’Souza translated the ‘Merchant of Venice’, ‘As You Like It’, ‘Hamlet’ and ‘Winter’s Tale’ and staged them in the tiatr format. Joao Lazarus D’Souza adapted and staged ‘Romeo and Juliet’.

Joao Agostinho Fernandes was the first writer to write original scripts on themes highlighting injustices in the Goan society. He was also pioneered the composing of lyrics and original music scores. In view of this it is clear that tiatr has no relevance to folk theatre or folk songs or folk music. Tiatr is a product of modern theatre - a fusion of modern prose and modern song and music.

Founding fathers gathering dust!
PANJIM, Jan 13: The portraits of Goa's first Chief Minister Dayanand 'Bhau' Bandodkar and Father of the Opinion Poll Dr Jack de Sequeira are presently gathering dust at the Adil Shah palace in Panjim, the heritage building which once housed the state secretariat and the legislative Assembly. Spiders have spun webs around these portraits as they lie in the dust of the Adil Shah Palace, which is presently undergoing restoration. [Janim Xavier, Herald]

Education through drama

Ives Tavares with Seby Pinto has released a video film, with the evils of abortion and other vices as its main theme.
Titled ‘Bhitorlea Monancho Mhonis’, this docu drama released through MANFA MUSIC, Margao educates and entertains.
The tale revolves round three couples. One is longing for a child, the other aborts their baby and the husband has an affair while the third wishes to go in for an abortion as the wife feels the baby will be troublesome.
The stories of these couples run parallel, with plenty of knowledge imparted on artificial insemination, troubles, physical and emotional pain inflicted by abortion and the evils of alcoholism. There is also the comedy with a puny lottery vendor who sells tickets to cigarette smokers and the prizes include cancers, heart diseases and other serious illness. Watch out also for the owner of the fighter cock, who is also a victim of smoking.
The cast has Felcy, Aplon, Annie and Pradnya playing major roles. There is Mathew, Anil Kumar, Seby Pinto and Elvis. Others in the cast include Dr Silvano Sapeco, Fr Savio, Fr Valerian Vaz and many others. The lighter humorous momments are provided by Humbert and Ives.
Mukesh and Mathew’s music is pleasant and Minguel Fernandes photography captures the scenes well although a bit of editing would have made the film much more slick. However, the educative element makes the film worth watching.
The other release from Manfa Music is ‘Vadoll’ a suspense film written by Valencio Vaz and directed by Fabian G da Costa. A story of a young man who has gone mad after his fiancĂ©e is murdered, the film continues with the turmoil of the boy’s parents, the entry of another girl who looks just like the murdered one and the motives of her lover. There is a lecherous ‘mama’, a cop who solves the murder in a jiffy and also many other characters who flit in and out.
The continuity of the suspense story is unfortunately marred by the long drawn comedy, which should have been cut to the bare minimum. Hazel heads the cast with the double role of the murdered girl and her look alike. Fine performances also come from Jessie, Mario de Vasoo, Elvis, Mini Mario, Ronny, and Valencio. Others in the cast are Milagres de Chandor, Janet, Ambe, Marcus and some others.
Chris Correia’s music is pleasant and Yogesh Mandrekar’s photography pleases the eye though the editing and dubbing leaves much to be desired.
An average entertainer!!!

Ordhi Bhakri

A story of selfless love

Thirty years back, Prem Kumar, the showman of the Konkani stage had written and directed the ‘tiatr’ titled ‘Ordhi Bhakri’. The same play has now been presented under the direction of Anil Kumar. After watching the show, one feels, that full justice has been done to this beautiful play.Produced by Candido Araujo, this tale of love, treachery and forgiveness depicts the selfless and undemanding love of Jose towards Paul, the son of the couple who had adopted him.

Jose is a poor farmer, married to Rosa and struggling to make both ends meet. He sends Paul to Mumbai to graduate into an engineer but Paul enjoys his life at Jose’s cost, falls in love with Nora all the time lying to her, that his brother is a rich businessman settled in Canada. The two get married and Jose is not even invited. On learning of his foster brother’s marriage, Jose lands in Mumbai, is insulted by Paul and sent back. When Nora learns of the happenings, from her sister Vera, she decides on a plan.

Watch what she does to put things right, in this absorbing entertainer that keeps the viewer engrossed till the end.
The presentation is a treat to the eyes and ears. The simple but thought provoking script from Prem Kumar, without those complex words, conveys the right message to the audience. The direction is sleek, the sets simple with good light effects and all the actors dress code is just appropriate.

The well chosen cast has Angela as Rosa. Her dialogue delivery with the right amount of emotion and her act is perfect. Fine performances come from Evon as Nora and Fatima as Vera. Anthony San as Jose and Anil Kumar as the rich landlord, perform wonderfully. So does Mathew with his subdued performance as the loving and understanding brother of Nora. Godwin as Paul acts well in the livelier parts but tends to overplay during the tragic parts. Micheal provides the comic relief, doing a fine job supported by a newcomer and Maria as Kamala, in a great performance of a Marathi speaking fisherwoman.

Josinho, Norman, Xavier and others provide some good music specially during the acts. The pick of the songs are two solos, a tribute to the late Dr. Jack de Sequeira by Xavier Almeida (great voice and singing) and a tribute to the late Ulhas Buyao by Anthony San. There are some nice songs by Joaquim Cabral, Socorro de Sta cruz, Godwin S Lemos, a trio from Fatima, Anil and Tony and a couple of other songs.

Although the story takes place 30 years back, the play never seems outdated. A perfect entertainer, do see it with the whole family. Highly recommended. !!!

‘Hea Gharachim Dharam Bhond’


A story of sacrifice and evil deeds

Laurente Pereira from Utorda, working in the Gulf, is an actor who has made quite an impression on the Konkani stage in Goa. After presenting his ‘tiatr’ titled ‘Hea Gharachim Dharam Bond’ in Gulf, the show is now staged in Goa. Some of the best artistes from the Konkani stage perform a tale of selfless love, misunderstandings, sacrifice and the evil that some men can do.The story revolves round a father, his two daughters Cynthia and Sonia and Trevor, the son. While Cynthia marries Dylan, Sonia is ditched at the altar for not bringing enough dowry. The son is a drunkard and presumed good for nothing. Dylan is a kind hearted individual, helpful to all and loves his wife a lot. But there is always evil lurking around in the form of Vicky, a freak of a man who is out to spoil peace for others. Watch what happens later as the story unfolds, when good triumphs over evil in the end.

The script has some nice meaningful dialogues but some of the incidents seem a bit dated. Suicide is not covered by Life Insurance and Trevor’s character is very much downtrodden.

The setting is beautiful, the light effects timely and the direction is just right. The well chosen cast has Felcy as Cynthia and Olga as Sonia. Two well enacted roles, both in the happy times as well as the sad times. Meena does her bit as the mother. Roseferns does a wonderful role of the father while Mathew’s act as the loving and caring Dylan is just perfect. Pascoal plays the drunken Trevor in his usual calm and confident manner and Victor is Cliff, the man who refuses to marry Sonia but wants her to come back later. Anil Pednekar is the evil Vicky. The audience could hate the character he plays, at the same time laugh at what he has to say. Cajetan does a wonderful cameo of the ‘bhatkar’. The comedy is provided by Querobina, Selvy and Agostinho. Quite amusing and once again Selvy steals the show with a great performance.

The opening song has the director introducing himself to the audience, with gratitude for all the support he received. There are some nice songs from Lawry, Pascoal and Marcos. One of the main attractions is a trio by Laurente – Marcus – Cajetan and a wonderfully humorous quartet by Peter – Roshan – Lawry – Selvy. There is also an impressive octet Laurente – Querobina - Pascoal – Felcy – Mathew – Olga – Victor and ofcourse Selvy. The play is an entertainer and is definitely worth watching!!!

‘Ho Mhozo Kaido’

Play with moral message

Konkani play ‘Ho Mhozo Kaido’ is the maiden release from Antush D’Silva. The ‘tiatr’ produced by J A Creations is a story of neglected parents, but has some situations that make the play quite interesting. Maria and Joseph are the elderly couple, who have spent most of their hard earned money not only to educate their two children but also to help them secure good jobs.The son, Allen is a customs officer, while Vincy, the daughter is an airhostess. Vincy wants to marry outside their religion and when parents object, she walks out of the house. Allen marries Vera, is bewitched by her and tends to forget his parents. Maria is suffering from blood cancer and requires frequent transfusions; so Joseph begs his son for help. Prodded by his wife, the son feigns helplessness. Watch what happens later in this presentation that is sometimes engrossing but at times, with situations that happen too conveniently.

There are impressive dialogues, fine direction but accusing a terminally sick mother of having an affair leaves a very rancid taste in the mouth. And why is the rest of the family never told of a serious sickness, in most of our Konkani dramas? Two scenes stand out for their stylish execution; the release of the bird and the angry father losing his head.

Antonette gives a fine performance with just the right emotion, as the suffering Maria. Felcy as Vera and Olga as Vincy give great negative performances, the former as the evil daughter-in-law and the latter as the heartless daughter. Antush is outstanding as the elderly father and this could be one of his best acts. Maxcy tends to make a tragedy of a negative role while Justino as Vera’s father, does his role in style. Filipe Almeida as the doctor and Menino de Bandar as a moneylender, lend good support. Janet, Agostinho and Marcos provide some average comedy. Cruz de Sanvordem backs with some good music and the background score during the acts, on the keyboard, is very appropriate.

In between the acts there are some great songs from Felcy, Marcus Vaz, Socorro de Santa Cruz, Francis de Tuem, Lawry, Menino de Bandar and Antush. The trio by Socorro, Cyril Almeida and Osvi Viegas deserves a special mention. A drama that is definitely worth watching.

A laugh riot

‘Rojea’, the latest ‘tiatr’ from Prince Jacob Productions is an entertainer that makes a mockery of age-old false beliefs and at the same time, presents a family drama with lots of humour.
Margarida, an elderly widow runs her household with an iron hand. Her sons, Bernard and Damiao together with their respective wives, Angela and Lorraine are completely dominated by her. Her husband has been dead for some years but occasionally pays her a visit (in scenes that are executed in style) to point out her faults.
Angela loves and respects her husband but they have no children. She is accused of being barren, always taunted and ill treated, something she suffers silently. Lorraine has made a puppet of her husband, always dominating and abusive, but she is treated well. The play continues with the depiction of the lives of these family members together with some other characters, till the final triumph of patience and goodness over evil.
For once, the audience is witness to a laugh riot from the beginning to the end of the play. There is never a dull moment and the pace never slackens. Jacob has done a great job of the direction and the script has some very good lines. Please watch out for the message on abortions.
The cast perform without a hitch. Diana plays the matriarch Margarida, showing no emotion, just her dominance. But note the change in her demeanour when she sees her dead husband. Annie is Angela and Lorraine is Lorraine. The two act well, the former demure and suffering, the latter vivacious, crooked and domineering. Jacinto is rightly cast as Bernard and so is Bernard as Damiao. Aniceto, Ave and Joaquim play minor but important roles. The highlight is the comedy. Anita is perfect as the fashionable housemaid. The newcomer has a perfect style of acting, dialogue delivery and sense of timing. Watching her is great fun. Humberto with his mannerisms, swaggering walk and dialogue delivery, had the audience in splits. Jacob once again proves his mastery not only in comedy but acting as well. He plays three roles, is perfect in all, especially that of the dead husband.
Chari’s setting is simple but effective and John provides the perfect lighting. Music is provided by Domnic de Arambol and the opening song is enacted beautifully, involving most of the cast. Agnelo’s score on the keyboards, during the acts, is pleasant and there are some great songs from Annie, Lorraine, Ave, Aniceto, Bernard, Humbert and Jacob. A special mention has to be made of the tribute paid in song by Ave, to the late Dr Jack Sequeira. We Goans should be grateful to the late politician for preserving our identity and our mother tongue, Konkani. The song has great lyrics and is presented very well.
The play is a must see don’t miss it for anything!!!!

Mali bags tops slot in 33rd tiatr competition at KA

The results of 33rd tiatr competition organized by Kala Academy have been declared and accordingly Mali staged by St. Michael Taleigao Socio-Cultural Association, Taleigao, bagged the first prize for the best performance. The competition was held between September 21., to October 10 at the Dinanath Mangeshkar Kala Mandir, Panjim with the participation of 12 tiatr groups. The competition was judged by Anthony Vaz, Teotonio D’Costa and Prof. Jose Salvador Fernandes, who gave their detailed results after evaluating the performances staged in the competition.
As per the detailed result, Odruxtti Jivit staged by Kala Mogi, Candolim has been selected for second prize, whereas Dolleam Add staged by Dramatic Troupe of Ribandar, Ribandar was adjudged for third prize. The consolation prize for performance was awarded to Chuddet’ staged by Britona Dramatic Academy, Penha -De -France.
The first prize for direction has been awarded to Premanand Polle for Mali, whereas the second prize has been given to Diogo Fernandes for Dolleam Add.The third prize for direction has gone to Avinash Chari for Fantodd.
The first prize for acting (male) has been given to Pradeep Naik (Romeo) - Dolleam Add..., and Custodio Cabral (Jaki-Pai) - Mali has been selected for the second prize. The first prize for acting (female) has been awarded to Gloria D’Souza (Bostian - Mai) - Mali and the second prize has been given to Irene Cardozo (Carmelin) - Odruxtti Jivit. The merit certificates for acting (male) have been awarded to Anthony Carvalho (Castelino) - Odruxtti Jivit, Shirish Naik (Clive) -Chuddet, Francisco Xavier Gonsalves (Lewis) - Air Hostess, Reginaldo Nazareth (Minglu) and Max Cabral (Max)- Xevott Aschona. Joe Luis D’Souza (Fudlea Pindkek Samball) - Chuddet has bagged the prize for best lyrics whereas the merit certificate in this category has been given to Sebastiao Salvador Fernandes (Konknni Bhas) - Khonuch Noko.
The first prize for script writing has been awarded to Pedro Vaz for the script of Mali whereas, the second prize has been bagged by Diogo Fernandes for Dolleam Add. Kala Academy has congratulated all the prize winning institutions and also the artistes.

Pedro Vaz' tiatr "MALI" wins first prize at
Kala Academy Tiatr Competition 2007


"Mali" written by Pedro Vaz and presented by St. Micheal Socio Cultural Association, Taleigao won the first prize at the Kala Academy’s 33rd Konkani Tiatr Competition 2007. "Odruxtti Jivit" written by Joao Cardozo and presented by Kala Mogi, Candolim bagged the second prize, while "Dollem Add...." written by Diogo Fernandes and staged by Dramatic Troupe of Ribandar was awarded the third prize.

The much patronized Kala Academy annual tiatr competition commenced on September 21 and concluded on October 10, 2007 (yesterday). The tiatr loving audience have a good time throughout the 3-weeks of the competition, where talented script writers, directors, stage set decorators, musicians and actors get a chance to display their talents, and gain recognition and fame.

In all, 12 Goan tiatr groups participated in this competition and included Sao Minguel Club, Dona Paula, Corjuem Dramatic Troupe-Corjuem, Kala Bharati Goa-Mormugao, Machi Mogi-St. Cruz, Britona Dramatic Academy-Penha de France, Alfi Art Production-Divar, United Dramatic Association-Carambolim, Tornateacho Ekvott-Margao, and Merces Club-Merces.

Kala Academy Award winner for best actor Cajetan Pereira (popularly known as Cajetan de Sanvordem) has played the role of maestro with unmatched superiority while Salu Faleiro, Comedian Philip, Braz de Parra, Abby Pereira and Babbit Dourado have done justice to their roles as select artistes of the ensemble.

The theatre comedian, Salu Faleiro who began his career with one-scene glimpses in stage shows has played a cameo role in the movie. Salu’s ability to make someone laugh genuinely is absolutely great. His body language and dialogue delivery has the core strength of the indigenous. Infact there is something that is peculiar about the roles of Babbit Dourado, Braz, Philip and Salu Faleiro. They represent in their body and speech, the native idiom. While the other stars dressed their part, these actors have delved into the home milieu and come up with performances that carry the essence of originality. They have graduated with ease retaining their links to the native roots intact.

Philip, a young veteran of more than 3 decades on stage, has mastered the art of comedy over the years. His charm and impeccable 'screen presence' captivates the audience in BLACK. "I feel proud to say I’ve never got a bad reception for my roles,” says Philip on his successful performance. He further adds, “I would like to categorize the film as a spectacle of humour, wit and emotion weaved together in a simplistic morality. The movie keeps your curiosity alive...”

Babbit Dourado has traversed much distance before he faced the movie camera. “I have fulfilled my dream to play a youth of this generation on screen,” stated Babbit about his role.

Braz de Parra’s role and existence in the movie is simply unforgettable. Winner of Best Singer Kala Academy Award in 1989, Braz also holds credits for the lyrics of ‘BLACK’.


Director of award winning short film in English, 'The Letter' that won the Best Film award at the 2005 London Film Festival, T-Bush has included a crew of Goan and Mangalore-ian artistes for the making of BLACK. The state-of-the-art director has made use of the latest E-Cinema technology for the making of the film.

The film premiered earlier on August 10, 2007 at Al Masrah, Hawally Auditorium at the hands of Indian Ambassador Mr. M. Ganapati is the first Indian film to be made in Kuwait, produced mainly for the Konkani masses.


The movie revolves around a musician who is involved in trivial assignments of traditional music. Culture and music means everything to the self-born maestro who just cannot give up on his passion for music. His effort to persuade the young genre to keep the art living in the face of fading tradition runs to an emotional zenith as the movie unfolds.


The music maestro and his five pupils form the core of this feature film. The five musicians who figure in the ‘BLACK’ ensemble portray what is wrong, what has changed, and what is inevitable in today’s genre of music and musicians in a sweet, just, humane and interesting melodrama of wit and emotions filmed with a Goan backdrop of traditions and culture.

Gracy Morais, one of the stars of ‘BLACK Nhesop Atanchem Fashion’ has been in the limelight right from the age of 4 years. A Kala Academy Award Winner for Best Child Artiste and Best Actress, Gracy has gained fame over the years in variety of roles including award winning ones at various stage competitions in Goa and Kuwait.


In an interview to Gasper Crasto after the release of the movie, Gracy speaks about her role and her alluring presence in ‘BLACK’. The Konkani language E-Cinema released by Indian Ambassador to Kuwait Mr. Madhusudan Ganapathi earlier in August 2007 is now set for re-screening with English subtitles on November 30, 2007 at Al Masrah, Hawally Auditorium. The movie is written and directed by T-Bush – winner of 3 International Awards at the London Film Festival for his short film, ‘The Letter’.




Excerpts of the interview with Gracy:


Q. Describe those moments when you saw yourself on the big screen.


Gracy: It was the most defining moment of my life. In those fleeting moments, I felt my soul completely bared and I sat completely vulnerable, open for criticism or praise that would follow from the packed audience watching the film. I felt alone although I had my entire family watching it with me. Of course, I missed my dad and wished he was alive to watch this film with me.




Q. Comment on your role in ‘BLACK.’

Gracy: We had a fair outline of the characters we would be portraying. However, the depth and intensity of my character hit me only after watching the film. I am glad that that my role has been etched out adequately by T-Bush.


Q. Comment on the views/reviews from the media on your role or the film.

Gracy: We had excellent reviews from the audience, some of whom personally complimented us on the film.


I guess some people had vague expectations from the film. Sadly enough, and as in many cases, people used ‘BLACK’ to settle personal vendettas against the promoters and artistes of the film. Some comments emanated from a section of people who could not differentiate between a film and drama or home videos. I believe constructive criticism can definitely lead to improvement but criticism laced with jealousy, hatred and envy can be hardly effective in bringing about an intended change. One should realize that a film is different from a stage play.


Q. How do you usually choose your roles?


Gracy: I wish producers would offer us a choice of scripts. But directors have their mind set and the artistes have to prepare themselves to meet the role requirements. However, all directors I have worked with have shown full trust in me and always given me the flexibility to mould my character within its broad parameters even to the extent of rewriting some of the dialogues.


Q. You seem to be giving a perfect performance every time you act? How hard is your effort and commitment towards acting?

Gracy: I love acting and when I commit to something there is no looking back. It is very important to visualize the character, get into it, and the rest is easy. If you cannot shake off your original personality, then you better be away.




Q. Of late you have a long interval in acting after BLACK. Why?


Gracy: I have been involved in too many activities since coming to Kuwait. I would like to really slow down a bit now.


Q. What are your views on Indian film production abroad?


Gracy: Oh, I am so glad that people like T-Bush have become the trendsetters in the Middle East. More and more people come forward nowadays to experiment the entertainment business in this part of the world. For us artistes, it is a blessing in disguise - we do not have to sacrifice our art just because we are migrated to the Middle East for greener pastures.


Q. Tell us about your favorite artistes and films.

Gracy: The list keeps growing. It is an overwhelming experience to watch some of the Indian actors and actresses come up with amazing performances in every new movie.

Q. What are your other future aspirations?


Gracy: May be, I will get into production soon – I have almost completed a film script that took some time to research – I am happy with the final effort. If I can arrange the resources I will get into production and direct it myself, if not, I might just offer it to some creative director to make a film out of it.

FRANCIS de VERNA is a long time resident in Kuwait. He has been on the Konkani stage in Goa and Mumbai since 1965. He has been elected to several Goan organizations including the Goan Welfare Society (GWS), and Kuwait-Goa Tiatristanchi Sonvstha (KGTS), and performs/sings on stage regularly. His Konkani AUDIO Album 'Ojapanchi Maim' in dedication to Mother Mary speaks much about the humble star's ingenuity in music and his ideological vision.


In a brief Interview to www.goa-world.com team, the senior Kuwait-based Goan Konkani stage artiste who plays a guest appearance role in the first Konkani E-Cinema “BLACK Nhesop Atanchem Fashion”, Francis de Verna revealed his heart:


Excerpts:


Q. Tell us about what you felt about BLACK on its release.

Francis de Verna: To my knowledge and experience of Konkani entertainment in over 40 years, the film is fantastic with the best music ever produced for a Konkani film.


Q. Describe those moments when you saw yourself on the big screen.

Francis de Verna: As this was my first appearance on the big screen, I felt very happy and am proud to have acted in the first Konkani E-cinema.


Q. Comment on your role in Black.

Francis de Verna: My role is very simple but I liked it as it is -- short and sweet.


Q. How do you usually choose your roles?

Francis de Verna: I choose my roles based on my ability to do justice for the ‘character’ portrayed.


Q. How hard is your effort and commitment towards acting?

Francis de Verna: I have been performing on the stage since 1965. I have acted and sung for most of the yesteryear’s dramatists and troupes. I love the Konkani stage and will continue to work for it. I always put my utmost efforts and given an opportunity I commit myself to perform to the best of my ability.


Q. Which kind of characters do you like acting?

Francis de Verna: My characters are always of tragedy, and as long as I live I will do ‘sad’ roles. It gives me great enthusiasm to perform such roles. It gives me the strength to display my natural capabilities towards the enactment of such roles.


Q. Of late you are not heard of after BLACK. Why?

Francis de Verna: As we all are well aware, one’s job is more important in this part of the country for survival. Could be in the next film, I may be there with a better performance or in the next tiatr. I sang a song on ‘Goa Day’ very recently. If time permits, I would be ready to perform for all the forthcoming dramas, but sadly it is not to be so as my job is of such nature that I have to be in action at short notice.


Q. What are your views on Goan films?

Francis de Verna: Good prospects. Our village son from Verna T-Bush can now be considered as one of the Indian film greats! With the unique technology and sound system incorporated in ‘BLACK’, T-Bush has become a shining star of this genre. He is a pride of all Goans. Moreover, he has made Kuwait Goans proud producing the first E-Cinema from Kuwait.


Q. Tell us about your favourite artistes and films.

Francis de Verna: My favorite artistes were C.Alvares and Cecilia Machado. ‘Amchem Noxib’, ‘Nirmonn’ and ‘Mogacho Anvddo’ are the best Konkani films I’ve watched in the theatres.


Q. How would you rate yourself as an artiste?

Francis de Verna: As you are well aware singing and acting is in my blood. I rate myself in the top category of Konkani Stage artistes. As I mentioned earlier, I have been involved in many cultural activities right from my schooldays and I have always earned a good name as an artiste. That’s how I wish to remain.


Q. What are your other future aspirations?

Francis de Verna: Retiring peacefully in our beautiful Goa is my dream. I also wish to continue my good work on stage with the blessings of Almighty God.

‘Rupem Bhangar Magi Naim’


Parental love towards children is incomparable

Comedian Dominick and Luis Bachan’s latest presentation ‘Rupem Bhangar Magi Naim’ is a tale of love showered on children by the parents, the ungratefulness from the children and the victory that can be achieved in most situations through love and in others, with a hard slap.Albert and Fatu is an elderly couple with a wayward son, Eddie. The parents are poor, all their savings were spent on the treatment of the son, when he was a baby. Now that they have no money, the son ill-treats them and makes demands.
George and Dolla are the other couple, well off and pampering their only son with gifts, money and love as well. George is loved by his neighbours as he does everyone a lot of good. He manages to put Eddie right but his own son......well, the rest is to be watched on stage in this engrossing and entertaining play which has been presented very well.

A good script highlighting various social issues and evils in our society is stylishly directed by Dominic. The appropriate setting and the light effects enhance the quality of the production with the well chosen cast putting up fine performances. Dolla is wonderful as the pampering mother who loves her husband and son as well as the bickering neighbours. Watch her as she awaits outside the ICU in the hospital, where her husband is admitted, Simply Superb! Luiza as Fatu puts her all in the role.

Pradeep Naik gives another brilliant performance as George especially when he displays disappointment in his son. Rupesh Jogle is perfect as the wayward son. His acting and dialogue delivery is great. Francis de Tuem is the rich man’s son and performs well in his first major role. The cast also has Albert as Albert, Andrew and Leslie as friends, and Millie as the school teacher.
As expected in Dominick’s plays, the comedy is packed with humorous situations. From the first entry that Luis Bachan makes along with Succorine and later Dominick as the
bald tailor with Mathew, the fun never ends keeping the audience roiling with Laughter.
Carlito backs the singers with some well arranged music and Xavier’s drumming is great. Andrew sings the opening song to introduce the play. There are solos, duets and trios by various singers including Luiza, Dolla, Andrew, Albert, Mathew, Luis, Dominick, Willie and Leslie. One solo rendered by Francis de Tuem stands out for the courage and guts displayed in the lyrics by the singer.
A wonderful presentation that has to be seen by the whole family. Don’t miss it

He Goynche Put


God has his own plans

Inacio de Canacona presents ‘He Goynche Put’ a drama based on the sacrificial life of a priest, his brother and parents. A different story and a good presentation!!
Anushka and Lazarus have two sons. One has been ordained a priest and deputed to a place with plenty of communal violence but also with a need of a missionary. The other son, Derrick, was a no good womaniser but has turned a new leaf with the prayers of his brother as well as some good advice. He is going to marry Riya, daughter of PI Braz, a honest cop. On the day of the wedding the family awaits the arrival of the priest, who is supposed to celebrate the nuptials. But there is some terrible news.....Watch the rest in this impressive drama that has a nice message at the end.
The title ‘He Goynche Put’ refers to Fr Agnel and Fr Jose Vaz and the director exhorts the Goan youth to emulate these holy priests. The Script has some good dialogues especially between the young priest and the leader of the religious bigots.
The cast has a couple of veterans but mostly fresh faces; Natty makes a fine debut on the Konkani stage with a beautiful performance as Riya. Her stage presence, dialogue delivery and overall acting are very good for a newcomer. Keep it up Natty, we hope to see more of you on the stage.
Jessie plays the role of the mother in her usual confidence and Flavia acts as the nun. Neville is perfect as the young priest and later as the Vicar, and so is Baptist as the unfortunate Derrick and Inacio as the leader of the communal goons. Peter de Merces is the father, Lazarus and Gabriel, the honest cop. Marshall is the sacristan in the Church.
The tragic tale is offset by good comedy from Rumaldo, Pitush and Allwyn, who present some good fun.
The opening song is rendered by Inacio with music provided by Braz de Xelvona. In between the acts there are some nice songs form Inacio, Jack, Rosario and an impressive trio from Inacio-Neville-Baptist.
Watch this drama by the upcoming director; it has entertainment and a nice presentation.

PANJIM, OCT 18, 2007 — A condolence meeting called on Thursday in the City made a fervent appeal to the State Government to posthumously honour three stalwarts of the Konkani stage C Alvares, Nelson Afonso and Prem Kumar.
Dalgado Konknni Akademi (DKA) President Tomazinho Cardozo was in the forefront to make the appeal at the meeting called to condole the deaths of Fr Moreno de Souza sj and Prem Kumar, both of whom passed away recently.
Cardozo recalled, “In the year 1969 Kumar was a super star and I had the opportunity to play a part alongside him. His tiatrs had scenes enacted that looked like movies, he remembered.
Speaking on Fr Moreno, he said no person would be able to forget the priest’s contribution to Konkani language. His four books on the churches of Goa constitute a proof of history and I sincerely wish somebody could translate these works into English, he added.
Apart from Cardozo, several tiatr artistes, priests, writers and other personalities, including friends, paid rich tributes to the two stalwarts of the Konkani language. Santa Cruz MLA Victoria Fernandes was also present.
Stage artist Ciriaco Dias, like Cardozo, also urged the Government to honour Prem Kumar and the others posthumously and reminded the gathering of the artist’s outstanding works like Mary Magdalene (tiatr) and Boglant (movie).
Another artist Fatima D’Souza recited a dialogue from one of Kumar’s dramas and showered accolades on him as a quality writer.
MLA Victoria Fernandes said the five minutes time allotted to her wouldn’t do justice to pay tributes to these pioneers of Konkani language and culture.
Fr Pratap Naik sj of Thomas Stephens Konknni Kendr said condolence had no place in Christianity and Fr Moreno and his works would always be alive.
Fr Mathew Almeida sj, ex-director of TSKK recalling the works of the two said both were innovators in their respective fields.
Others who paid their tributes were Anil Kumar, Premanand Sangodkar (both tiatrists), Pundalik Naik (noted playwright and GKA president), Miguel Braganza (horticulturist), Purnanand Chari (Konknni Bhasha Mandal President), Salvador Fernandes (DKA Secretary) and Michael Gracias (Editor of Jivit).

PANJIM, OCT 13 — The biography of the living legend of tiatr, M Boyer, researched and written by Michael Gracias, was released at the 77th birthday celebrations of Manuel Santan Aguiar aka M Boyer at an impressive function at Kala Academy, Panjim, Goa.
Speaking on the occasion as the chief guest, Mauvin Godinho, Deputy Speaker of Goa Legislative Assembly, complimented the author and the publishers for the great work that they had accomplished. He said that there was no “Goan identity” without Konkani. The Goa government was committed to promote Konkani through publications, tiatr and other forms of expression.
Responding to the suggestions of other speakers before him, specially Cyriaco Dias, co-villager and co-actor of M Boyer and former Speaker of Goa Legislative Assembly, Tomazinho Cardoz, a well known tiatrist, educationist and current President of Dalgado Konkani Akademi as well as a member of Goa Konkani Akademi.
Earlier, Tarkeshwar Naik welcomed the dignitaries, tiatrists and Konkani Mogi for the function. Premanand Lotlikar elaborated on the book, while Cyriaco Dias introduced on M Boyer's life, while Tomazinho Cardoz and Fr Conceicao D’Silva addressed the gathering. Vincy Quadros, a well known Konkani writer, compered the function.
M Boyer is the only Goan artiste to be so far honoured with an award of the Sangeet Natak Academy of India. He received this honour in 1994 at the hands of the then President of India Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma.
In 2005, Dr A P J Abdul Kalam, presented the Padmashree award to M Boyer.
M Boyer has received a number of awards since 1967. The big ones include the Kala Academy Award on the Centenary Celebrations of tiatr in 1992 and Goa Konkani Akademi Award in 1993 that preceded the Sangit Natak Academy Award as well as the Akhil Bharatiya Konkani Sangeet Sammelan Award in 2002 and Dalgado Konkani Akademi award in 2004 that preceded the Padmashree in 2005 and finally the Goa State Rewards in 2007.

25th ‘Gulab’ awards 2007

The ‘Gulab’ Awards, promoted by the Konkani magazine ‘Gulab’ were instituted in the year 1983 to recognise and encourage talent on the Konkani stage by the late Fr Freddy J da Costa. This is the 25th year of presenting these prestigious awards on the 20th July, 2007 the 54th birthday of Fr Freddy, the editorial board of ‘Gulab’ in association with Manfa Music, Margao presented trophies not only to artistes of the Konkani stage but also to writers, sports persons and other personalities.The programme was well organised, the presentation of awards interspersed with Konkani songs and four comedy skits, which the audience enjoyed.

The award for the personality of the year went to Dr Oscar Rebello, for the agitation he led against the draconian Regional Plan. In his short speech, the good doctor urged Goans to keep the interest of Goa above all.

The award for a Konkani writer in Roman Script went to Cruzinho R Pinho and Stefi Vaz bagged the award for sports. Some personalities were felicitated for their good work in promoting the Konkani language and other social issues. These included Sudha Amonkar, Remmie Colaco, Romaldo Rodrigues, G R Crasto and Daniel F D’Souza. These were presented with a citation and a shawl.

The awards for best actor on the Konkani stage was bagged by Peter de Benaulim for his role of a lecherous rich man in Rosefern’s ‘Goemkar’. Rosy Alvares was declared best actor, for her outstanding performance of a handicapped person in Mario Menezes’ heart touching drama, ‘Tachem Chintat Tinvuim mhonxeam’. This drama also fetched its writer and director, Mario Menezes, the award for best script and best director.

The best comedian award went to ben Evangelisto for a wonderful imitation of the late Jacinto Vaz in the grand revival of M Boyer’s Konkani drama ‘Sounsar Sudhorlo’. Sharon bagged the award for best female singer while Osvi viegas was declared the best male singer.

The award for best musician went to Norman Cardozo for his score in the drama ‘Pallam’ written and directed by Donald Colaco.

The awards were presented for the year 2005- 2006.

In between the presentation of awards, the audience were treated to some nice songs by Lawry Travasso, Pascoal Rodrigues, C d’Silva, Osvi Viegas and Felcy. A humorous comedy skit in four parts, written and directed by Agostinho Temudo featuring Janet, Anita, Ambe, Selvy and Agostinho kept the audience in splits. A VCD of a film titled ‘Vadoll’ was also released.

The function was compered in style by Annie Quadros with Mario Menezes and the felicitation was conducted by Agnelo de Bori. Norman Cardozo provided the beautiful music and while Fausto V da Costa, editor of the ‘Gulab’ spoke on the magazine and the importance of the awards, Fabian G da Costa proposed the vote of thanks and stated that the awards were presented on the basis of points awards by an independent panel of judges.

We hope that the magazine ‘Gulab’ continues to recognise and reward genuine talent from Goa.

Eka Patkiak Lagon

WAGES OF SIN

A BRIEF romantic misadventure, an illegitimate child, a broken love affair, a miscarriage, followed by a cold blooded murder and consequential suicide all neatly inter-woven together in a plot and you have a absorbing play called “Eka Patkiak Lagon .” The title of the play itself is very catchy giving one the chance to contemplate and imagine. The gist of the plot is how a happy life can take a negative turn and cause irreparable damage all for the sake of one sinner. A sleek presentation ‘Ek Patkiak Lagon' is presently drawing good crowds in the major towns of Goa .

I do not however wish to spell out the story line in detail, since this show is scheduled to be staged through this monsoon season. Nevertheless, as is the trademark of Roseferns shows, “Eka Patkiak Lagon” too has a very intricate and twisty tale, which keeps the audience guessing for the major part of the play. The show however goes a little beyond the customary three hours. The show begins with an opening chorus sung in pairs by six different artistes. This is something different from what we usually see. The opening scene is excellent in its depiction, relevant to the plot and well executed with the appropriate light and sound settings. It received a spontaneous and thunderous applause at Panjim from the viewers. Good work by Tony de Ribandar.

The play which begins on a romantic note at the foot of a village cross also has the most revealing part of the plot at the fag end at the very same spot. Nadia (Roshan) and Rahul (Victor) are deeply in love. Rahul the only son of wealthy Jeremias Machado (Roseferns) reveals his love story to this father. Rahul's father accepts his choice and there is no opposition of any kind.

Jeremias is willing to get his son Rahul married to Nadia. But, when Jeremias visits Nadia's residence to confirm and settle the marriage proposal with Nadia's mother Nancy, (Kezia) the story takes a different turn altogether. There is a quick exchange of emotional words between Nancy and Jeremias in the absence of their two children. The scene is effectively shown with good light effects and background music.

What follows next is a shocking revelation. I do not wish to reveal the secret for it will spoil the charm of seeing the play. Jeremias who all this time was in favour of the marriage of his son Rahul to Kezia does a volte face. He is against the marriage and like a responsible father and in atonement for his past mistake reveals the entire truth behind his behaviour to his son. This is a very absorbing scene and both father and son portray the emotions very well. What happens next, is that Rahul leaves his father's house and goes away without leaving any clue of this whereabouts. He returns back several years later as a priest. Surprised, aren't you? This is what keeps the story moving ahead to reveal the actual sinner.

What happens to Nadia one may ask, does she join the convent?? No, she is shattered no doubt with the sudden turn of events and disappearance of Rahul. Her love is too strong and she still pines and longs for Rahul. Nadia spurns off the romantic overtures from Joy a youth who has just returned from Bangalore . Kezia, the daughter of Jeremias enters the scene on her return from Bangalore after finishing her studies. She has her eyes on Joy, but Joy gives her the cold shoulder for he has his eyes set on pretty Nadia. Well, as they say all is fair in love and war, Nadia finally relents and with the help of Jeremias she proposes to Joy and they are happily married. Kezia wants to get even. She combines with Rubberband (Peter) to fulfill her plans. Now, why does Jeremias come to the help of Nadia in getting her married to Joy?? What is the reason for his fatherly concern in the well being of this girl named Nadia?? Well, Jeremias has a valid reason for that little extra concern, and the viewer is all aware of this right through the plot except for Nadia.

The marriage of Joy and Nadia is solemnised by Fr. Rahul, and something strange happens at the time of the nuptials. Thereafter several twists and turns brings Fr. Rahul and Nadia together once again under different circumstances. This gives rise to suspicion in the mind of Joy. He begins to ill treat Nadia, Rubberband and Kezia add fuel to the already burning fire. Nadia conceives but, Joy in his fit of anger and misunderstanding suspects Nadia's fidelity. She undergoes a miscarriage on account of Joy's violent behaviour. Another twist. There is the sudden disappearance of Fr. Rahul. Nobody knows his whereabouts.

What happens finally and how the innocence of Nadia is vindicated in the end is well narrated . But, not before sufficient damage is done and couple of lives are lost under tragic circumstances. All this for the sake of a single sinner!! See the play with your family for it does have a message. Comedians Agostinho Temudo as a corrupt to the core Inspector Joao Baptista Costa and Sally combine extremely well to bring about hilarious laughter at intermittent intervals. Agostinho is just too much and portrays the character very closely with a smooth shaven skull. His actions, dialogue delivery and actions evoke natural laughter. Sally has given good account of himself as a natural comedian opposite Agostinho. The humorous telephone conversation between Inspector Joao Baptista and the caller at the Police station and later the jokes on Valentine Day and Children's Day are really good.

Kezia the newcomer to the Roseferns troupe is a good pick and she has given commendable performance in a double role. She sings and emotes well too. Victor is good in the role of the priest and his singing talents are well exploited by the Director. Ulhas Tari as Joy is very dashing and natural in the role. Looks very confident and well poised. He has also lent his voice well to the opening chorus. Peter (Rubberband) plays a different and a difficult role altogether, but, he has given a polished and appreciative performance in this negative role. His change of costumes suits him well in the given role. Roshan is also good and natural as Nadia and has lent her melodious voice very well to all the ‘kantos' she sings. Roseferns takes the cake for his portrayal of the rich man and sensible father Jeremias Machado.

Juju and his naughty boys have provided soothing musical score and the background music is pleasing and soft without clashing with the delivery of dialogue. Aires Almeida as the light man has done a good job. And the message in “Eka Patkeak Lagon” is loud and clear, ‘Keep away from sin if you want to lead a good life without any misfortunes. A single sinner can sink the boat of your life.'

He came! He saw! He
conquered! Hearts and minds of tiatr lovers in Goa. A verdict unanimously pronounced by those who thronged to see Laurente Periera’s gripping drama, ”Hea Gharachim Dharam Bondh”.
After successfully staging the tiatr in Kuwait in late 2006, Laurente made an indelible impression on the Konkani stage in Goa by presenting his tiatr to capacity audiences in Panjim, Margao, Mapusa, Sanvordem, Morjim, and in his native home town Utorda.
The tiatr unfolds a very fascinating and intriguing story powered by love, hatred, jealousy, deceit, and interlaced with rib-tickling comedy.
The story revolves around father Baltazar(Roseferns), his two lovely daughters, Cynthia(Felcy), Sonia(Olga), and a habitually inebriated son Trevor(Pascoal Rodrigues). While Cynthia gets happily married to Dylan(Mathew Araujo), Sonia is double-crossed at the altar for not providing the promised dowry.
Now enter the devil-incarnate Vicky(Anil Pednekar) to unleash his evil machinations as the plot unfolds with suspenseful twists and turns, climaxing with good triumphing over evil.
The Kuwait-based artistes, namely Cajetan, Marcus, and the director Laurente, have given excellent performances but it is the comedy queen Querobina who shines with her wonderful portrayal, reappearing on stage in Goa after a lapse of 15 years.
The artistes from Goa like Olga, Felcy, Meena, Lawry, Osvy, Peter-Roshan, Victor, Mathew, Anil, and comedians Agostinho and Selvy are sheer delight to watch but the king of centuries Roseferns and the prince of centuries Pascoal Rodrigues bask in the limelight with superlative performances.
The solos, duets, trios, quartets are beautifully rendered, but it is the Octet, a rarity on modern stage that steals the thunder with excellent rendition.
The musical score by Anthony de Velim with Goa’s ace musicians is appealingly enjoyable as also the special light effects by Iris, particularly the visual illustration in which the crown from the head of the statue of Mother Mary floats and rests on the head of Sonia as a sign of divine intercession.
The stage setting is par excellence, especially the first time display in Goa of scenes of the Kuwait towers, the Liberation tower, and the 3-Banks complex, the landmark features of Kuwait.
Kudos to the director Laurente Pereira who apparently, has burnt a lot of midnight oil to bring such a magnum opus on stage.
The drama is an all-out entertainer, the memories of which are bound to linger in the minds of tiatr lovers for a long, long time.
